James doesn't have an american accent. He is terrific and looks great in this-go see it if you can. The cast is strong with maybe Sienna being the weak link in it all. There is one particularly lovely and moving scene between Sheridan and James. Oh and don't linger too long in the interval as instead of bells they play 40's music to get you back to your seats and we were late for second half!!

The scenes with Sienna were not as moving-she doesn't have the strength of acting to match James. When I read the play I felt sorry for Patricia but in the stage version your sympathy was more with Peter and the count and countess.

I agree! Few can compete with James'actors' talent, he has a very strong acting skills. It is really amazing how many positions he's acting!

smoking was not an unusual habit back then.I doubt that all the health risks going along with it were well known then.and since James smokes in real life as well no sense in omitting it

Many people smoke all their life and they live to an advanced age and against some people don´t smoke at all and they dying of cancer... It is very individual. James smokes a lot I think and I noticed he coughs very often Gemini suffer of lung diseases ofently for more. So it is hard faith to stopped to smoke!!!James is big man and he knows all the risks...

I agree with Eva - smoking was a very common, "socially acceptable" thing to do in the 1940's. I'm an old-time radio fan, and I'm aware that many of the shows that played during the period in the U.S. were actually sponsored by cigarette companies - that alone should give one the idea of its popularity during that time period. The smoking done in the play gives it a sense of "reality" (for the time period) so, in that respect, it's a good thing.
I also read the interview - fabulous and very informative! Thanks for the link!

I don't know what the law is outside of England but we have a smoking ban in public places and this does cover theatres as well. Smoking on stage is only permissable if it contributes to the artistic integrity of the scene. I regularly attend theatre-at least twice a month and this is one of very few plays I have seen in the past 4 years that has featured any smoking at all. Part of the law maintains that if any member of the audience complains then they have to cut the smoking out! It is an interesting decision on the part of the director and a brave one too. Mostly what happens is the actors light the cigarette but don't smoke it, or they just get it out of the packet and then don't light it.

My Darlings!
I am sorry to have left the Jamesian playground for so long (still not finished with book and have new man in life situation to contend with as well) but I think of you all, all the time. James Purefoy attracts the kind of women I love best (warm hearts/filthy minds). Luckily, he deserves such lovely fans.
So!
I think I am going to have to go to London and see Flare Path. It's worth sucking every last penny out of savings for - right? That's not a rhetorical question- I'm taking a vote: Should Iris radically plunder her pocket book to see James on stage.
Yes No
